Abstract

This study extends the dynamic newsvendor model to fast fashion, integrating demand spillover and deliberate understocking to explore inventory scarcity’s impact on demand. We demonstrate that strategic understocking can amplify consumer demand and enhance retailer profits, challenging conventional inventory practices. Through a novel model incorporating word-of-mouth and exclusivity effects, our analysis reveals optimal stocking strategies for sequential product launches. A numerical experiment validates that strategic scarcity can yield up to 36% profit increases, offering actionable insights for fast-fashion retailers navigating dynamic market trends.
